What is this project? Where is the sample set?

This project is trialing the creation of a sample set using a collaborative approach. This page will provide the recordings where were made on-location by me. 4 channels of microphone data were recorded: 2 were made using spaced omni-directional large diaphragm condenser microphones and 2 were made from a somewhat closer XY configured small-diaphragm spaced pair. I have mixed down the tracks to stereo and applied equalization to provide the tonality which I think is correct for the instrument. What is required is for these tracks to be noise-reduced, chopped up, looped and for an organ definition file to be created. The audio downloads will be supplied on a per-rank basis. Once the processing has been completed on an entire rank, pop me an email and I will give instructions on how to give me the completed work which I will then place on this website.

If you would like to contribute to this project, please send an empty email to x@y (where x = "firstchurch-join" and y = "appletonaudio.com"). This will subscribe you to the mailing list for this project where you can ask questions and state your intentions to work on ranks - this is helpful as we can keep track of who is working on what to avoid un-intentional overlaps. I will list beside the downloads the initials of all users working on particular ranks. The email address of the mailing list is x@y (where x = "firstchurch" and y = "appletonaudio.com") and is where generic questions can be directed.

All downloads will be supplied via bit-torrent. I am doing this as there is a tremendous amount of data which I will have to distribute from my own internet connection. There are bit-torrent clients available for all operating systems (Vuze [Windows, Linux, Mac], Transmission [Linux, Mac] don't contain spyware). You can help this project massively by ensuring that your bit-torrent client can be accessed from outside connections (if you don't know what this means, don't worry) and leaving the bit-torrent client open for as long as possible after the download completes. This will help reduce the amount of bandwidth I need to supply and will ensure faster downloads for everyone who tries to obtain these files.

General Organ Information

The organ of First Church was built in 1925 by Australian organ builder J. E. Dodd, rebuilt in 1935 by Whitehouse Bros of Brisbane and overhauled in 1979 by Pitchford and Garside of New South Wales. It is a 3 manual 39 stop instrument with many orchestral qualities. The organ is located at the front of the auditorium behind a screen in an elevated section of the building made for the organ.

I was contacted by the organist earlier in the year asking if there was anything that could be done to preserve the sound of the organ - as the building had been purchased by a private owner to be turned into a residence - as a result, these recordings were made over several weeks.
